Roles in Salsa & Bachata
In partner dances like salsa and bachata, there are two main roles:
The Lead
- Responsible for guiding the dance and creating the movement.
- Suggests steps, turns, and patterns by giving clear signals through connection.
- Think of the lead as the "navigator" who sets the direction.
The Follow
- Interprets and responds to the lead’s signals.
- Brings musicality, styling, and expression to the dance.
- Think of the follow as the "storyteller" who adds texture and feeling.
Important:
- Roles are not about gender. Anyone can learn to lead or follow.
- Many dancers eventually explore both roles to become more versatile.
- Clear communication and respect between partners make the dance fun and safe.
